If you're a mum in Surrey with an achy back, you're far from alone. Between lifting, carrying, feeding and the school run, a parent's body does a lot of work. This guide explains your options for getting a proper look at how you're moving, and what to expect if you choose a chiropractor.
Why mums' backs work so hard
Most of the strain we see in parents doesn't come from one big moment. It comes from small things repeated all day, every day:
Lifting a car seat in and out of the car
Carrying a toddler on one hip
Leaning over a cot, a bath or a changing mat
Sitting hunched while feeding
Crouching to a child's level, again and again
None of it feels like exercise, but your body is doing the work. It's worth noticing the positions you spend your day in.
Your options for getting it looked at
There is no single right answer, and many people use more than one. Common routes include your GP, a physiotherapist, an osteopath or a chiropractor. If your pain is severe, came on after a fall or injury, or comes with other symptoms, speak to your GP first.
If you choose a chiropractor, look for one who assesses before they treat, explains what they find in plain words, and tells you honestly if something is outside what they can help with.
How to choose a chiropractor
Check they are registered. In the UK, chiropractors must be registered with the General Chiropractic Council. You can search the register at gcc-uk.org.
Ask what the first visit involves. A good first visit includes your health history, a conversation about what you're experiencing, an assessment and an explanation of what's found.
Look for honest language. Be wary of promises or guarantees. No practitioner can promise a result.
Ask about children and pregnancy. If you'd like your family seen by one team, check the clinic is set up for that.
What happens at your first visit with us
At ib family chiropractic in Churt, we assess first. Then we decide what's appropriate for you.
Health history: we take the time to understand you, not just the headline symptom.
Consultation: what you're experiencing and what you're hoping for.
Assessment: a thorough look at your spine, joints, posture and movement.
Report of findings: we explain what we found and what we'd recommend.
No two people move the same way, so no two plans look the same either. If something isn't right for chiropractic, we'll tell you and point you toward the right person.
More than backs
Many of our patients are mums who first come in for themselves and then bring their children, or come during or after pregnancy. We see adults, children and babies, with a gentle assessment suited to each age. Parents often tell us they like having one friendly place for the whole family.
Who we are
We are a small team of chiropractors based in The Old Butcher Shop in Churt, serving families across Churt, Farnham, Ash, Haslemere, Hindhead, Frensham and the surrounding villages.
